Poráčska Valley (Poráč)    Google Map

Poráčska Valley is situated in the Slovak Rudohorie, close to the National Park Slovak Paradise - southwards from the village Poráč. Poráč is an old mountain village (760 m) known by its mining industry. The first written reference about the village is from the year 1247, but it existed a long time before. Gold, silver, especially copper (sc. "red gold"), later iron ore and mercury were mined in numerous mines located in this area.
The owners of mines came from Sedmohradsko, Wien, Budapest, Vítkovce, Levoča and Košice. European Consilium meetings were organised at the Jozef´s shaft. The hill that is situated very close to the village is called Vysoký Vrch (the High Hill). In fact it is not really high, it just has a very exceptional location. From the top (in good weather) you can see "almost" half of Slovakia.
In the village, there is an orthodox church. Masses are performed in old Slovak language. On the other side of the Poráčska Valley you will find the village Slovinky with Greek-Catholic and Orthodox church.
