    The town was built in the 12th century, when Bavarian miners from the southeastern part of Germany moved here and assimilated with the original Slavic population. Thanks to the rich resources of gold, silver and metal ores, Gelnica became one of the most important mining towns in former Upper Hungary.
    The ruins of the 13th century Gothic castle, the Gothic church from the 14th century and the Baroque Town Hall from the middle of 18th century, which was created from the earlier built Renaissance buildings, are the most important of the local cultural monuments.
    In town, you can find several Baroque-Classical townsmen houses, some of them with a typical mansard roofs, and folk architecture of miners and craftsmen houses from 19th century.
    An important architectural monument is also the covered wooden bridge from the year 1831.
